Oblivious to the World

Seen Reading:

At the beauty salon, a woman in her late sixties sat near the washing station.  Her white hair was rolled in tiny yellow perm rollers.  She wore a black salon cape, turqouise skinny jeans and black orthopaedic shoes.  Her reading glasses were wide-lensed and tortoise shell.  The book she was engrossed in?

The Girls from Ames: A Story of Women and a Forty-Year Friendship by Jeffrey Zaslow.

Have you seen anyone reading lately?

I was at Books•A•Million over the weekend, and three teenagers were in the YA section. The one was talking about all the books she read in that section, and the other (the boy) was going on and on about how he doesn't read because he wasn't a nerd. Then he asked the other friend if she read, and she said no like she was proud of it. Made me so sad!! So I spoke up and pointed to the reader girl and told her how smart she was! They all laughed, but I didn't really think it was all that funny. It makes me so so sad how young (and older) people think it's cool not to read. It worries me!

Laura I think the non reader is missing out on one of the basic pleasures of life. Sorry to hear they laughed at you. Think how spare their lives must be without the wonderful world of books. But also realize you passed along a great compliment to the avid reader. You never know what a small compliment can do to transform a teen's perspective. Happy reading!
